blank laptop screen

So I set up my shiny levono b50 laptop with win 8.1 on Saturday

I installed avast security

Can't get my head around shut down so I just held down the power button after doing some documents transfer couple days ago

Turn on the laptop, sigh on and up comes a blank screen with cursor

Turn off and on again and same problem except no cursor this time

The laptop is fully operating

What the heck can I do with the !!!!ing thing please

Cursor is there

No novo button to be found

Transferred files from ext hd on sat to the new laptop and deleted these from the ext hd so I need to endure I still have access to these if any recovery is performed

Bo idea how bloody recovery is to be performed though

Never buying this product again.

Before I ring up levono and chuck this laptop in their face what else can I do please

I won't trust mse articles for anything other than money

I had avg on my last laptop

Avast was written about here as one to install

It interacts with 8.1 after my research

After numerous attempts and pressing f8 and shift I have now got to troubleshoot mode and am attempting to system restore prior to avast installation. I'm not a tech expert - just someone who wants their bloody 3 day old laptop to function - so hopefully it works
