But they are not compatible - they have vastly different engines. Comparing a 120d and a 520d, the 120d will be cheaper.0

Also, in response to your earlier post, I'm not sure in what world any small car is £3000 more expensive than a similar age and milage large car.But they are not compatible - they have vastly different engines. Comparing a 120d and a 520d, the 120d will be cheaper.
Not now you've moved the goalposts, no.
I was going on your criteria of similar age and mileage, I failed to read what wasn't there. sorry.0 -

Sorry I didnt specify, I thought that would be presumed. The original quote was saying that smaller cars are more expensive, and that you pay a premium for owning a small car. My point was that this is simply incorrect, and that if a smaller car costs more, it is down to something other than the size. So milage, age or, in this example, engine size.
To reiterate in clearer language, given two theoretical cars where the only difference is size, the smaller one will NOT be £3000 more.0 -
When new and almost new yes a bigger car can cost more, But 5 years down the road and the smaller car can have a premium.
Who wants a 3L petrol car that does around 20mpg? People will choose the little diesel hatchback which may cost more.Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0 -
I wonder about this theory that petrol is often the best choice. I reckon I'm spending almost double the amount in fuel in my new petrol engine than I did in my diesel and even at only 10000 miles a year, I could end up spending £8-900 more in fuel, plus an extra £120 in road tax.0

Then its not the size of the car that makes the difference, its the engine. What about a 1.6 diesel Fiesta and a 1.6 diesel Mondeo? Both similar age, milage, spec etc, then the fiesta will be cheaper.0 -
My default suggestion for young drivers, rover 75 diesel. Cheap, comfortable, best part of 50mpg. Cheap to insure too.0

I think the Clio 1.5 DCi is a good one, yes Renault are renowned for electrical issues but the 1.5 diesel engines are pretty good.
Personally I would recommend a 10 year old VW Polo 1.9 SDI, no bells & whistles, lots of miles per gallon & LOW group 2 Insurance. The only downfall is the tax may be a bit higher, possibly £110.
Also Peugeot 206 1.4 HDI is cheap to tax (£30) with lots of MPG..... insurance on par with the Renault though0 -

Nope not just the engine.. They didnt do the 1.6 Mondeo until 2011, the price swap maybe borderline on that year.. Add another year or two and the smaller car will cost more.
£7000 for a 2011 1.6 TDCi Mondeo with 70k miles.
£7500 for a 2011 1.6 TDCI Fiesta with 50k miles.Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0
