    Thanks for that. If the roof space and the floor below are on different wiring circuits, will that make any difference to the effectiveness of the powerline type adaptors?
    They will both be on different rings but will in all likelihood all come from the same consumer unit. That will mean that the distance will be longer than it would if they were on the same ring. That almost certainly won't stop it working but may make the speed a little less than it otherwise would have been.

    Once again an easy return path will let you recover from a mistake. Amazon are also good on returns but I'd stick with giving Argos a try first. If something works but the Argos price is miles above Amazon then don't forget it's a "no quibble" return policy.

    Unless you need top grade performance in the loft you may as well go cheap - 200Mbps Homeplug and bottom grade N WiFi. That may not deliver the full 50Mbps your cable offers but will be fine formost things you are likely to want to do.

    Hi

    is it a superhub 1 or superhub 2? For identification, pictures of both units can easily be generated in a search engine.

    The superhub 1 had a pretty poor wireless signal which can easily be improved by switching to modem mode and adding your own router.

    These extenders degrade the performance of the general wifi, at least the one I once used for the garden did. I use grimsalve's method above but eventually swapped the pair of homeplugs for a long stretch of cat 5 Ethernet cable. With my electrics homeplugs give worse performance than 5ghz wifi.

    IMO, ethernet cabling is always going to be the cheapest, fastest, and most reliable method. It's just not always practical to have cables running around the house (it might be something I'll consider at some point in the future though).

    The powerlines I use at the moment max out at about 70mbps (at furthest point) so not perfect but slightly better performance than I could achieve with wireless lan alone.
  • I have a virgin super hub in the living room and have no problem logging in to the WiFi from the bedroom, but the downside is you will only get HALF the speed from it through WiFi,Virgin confirms this to me.

    so far as I can tell it is a superhub 1. However we do already have a Netgear wndr3700 v2 modem plugged into it. The distance from the Superhub to the attic spare room is around 60 feet with the spare room being on the opposite side of the house to the router. Also it is an old house with thick walls and doors.

    I am also a Virgin customer and already have an attic room connected to the internet via home plugs.

    I use Devolo Dlan Triple Homeplugs which allow three devices to be connected to the internet from one plug socket. I have a TV, Blu-Ray and Sky box connected on the third floor attic. They are by no means the cheapest, but are simple to use (just plug in) and have so far given over two years of trouble-free use.
    Here's a selection of their range;
