Apply Frontline Spot On to the nape of the cats necks every five weeks, spray the carpets and upholstery with Raid fly killer (less expensive, smells better and is as efficient as flea spray). Comb the cats thoroughly with a flea comb daily, preferably on a white sheet so you can see when the fleas/eggs start to lessen. Keep doing it until you're sure there's no sign of any more. If the cats will tolerate it bath/shower them in a good quality flea shampoo. I wouldn't personally recommend Bob Martins products, it has been known for some cats to be allergic to them. If the infestation is so bad that you're seeing fleas on your skin I would suggest getting a professional to treat the house.

    Frontline doesn't work!

Thanks for your input gettingtheresometime, I've been using Frontline on my cats (and dogs) for some time and they've never had fleas. While I can't speak for others opinions, I can say I'm entirely satisfied with the product I use.

Its also been a very good year for fleas - a long period of warm weather. I've had cats for years, and got a bit lax and we had quite a bad infestation. It can be sorted and is nothing to be embarrassed about. I was always told that fleas didn't really like being on people, so were unlikely to hitch a lift to work or other houses. But i did stop inviting people around for a bit!

I'd second a very good strong spray like indorex, and taking the cats to the vets to get a supply of whatever spot medication they recommend. My understanding is that resistance to some of the more common stuff has built up in some parts of the country. Its also worth spending time spraying nooks and crannies in the house - look at places where the cats lie, and soft furnishings obviously, but they also can lurk in cracks in floorboards etc. And don't despair - they will be vanquished if you stick with it, and carry on with putting stuff on the cat throughout the years.
  • We have had the same problem...all summer, 3 cats 2 dogs and a large garden with shady areas that they go to to get re-infected. This summer we have spent well in excess of £300 trying to sort the problem, frontline, a whole variety of sprays and pumps, powders, shampoos, foggers, collars and some organic powder too. Washed bedding, hoovered constantly, most of the house has wooden floors so not too much soft furnishings. I am at a loss. I think I am the only person who has been hoping for frosts so that it kills the ones outside and will make our inside attempts more worthwhile. We have always had animals and I have never had a problem like this. I am now considering rentokill or the council. Any advice would be great :(

Don't forget to spray your car too - easily overlooked.
  • Frontline doesnt work anymore on a lot of cats that how I ended up with a house full of fleas.
OP get Indorex and Advantage or Stronghold from the vets for the cats.
DO NOT GET BOB MARTINS AS IT CAN KILL YOUR PETS.
You also need to be hovering all the time , wash all the bedding on hot as well, even hoover the matressess.
It can take a while to get completley on top of, as flea eggs live in the carpets. I found flea bombs from Pest control to be the best.

To the person above if you have tried everything including foggers then I would pay for Rentokill myself. I was at that stage and then discovered foggers, http://www.pestcontrolsupplies.co.uk/insecto-flea-destroyer-bomb-150ml. These worked with advantage for the cats.

    Hung up my suit!
One way of getting the numbers down is to wear long white socks around the house so you will see any fleas that jump on your legs and can then kill them. This may sound crazy but it worked for me !! :D

    Frontline doesn't work!

Given we are nearly at panto time - Oh yes it does! :D I use Frontline on my cats and it works a treat. My friend has 2 cats as well, and it doesn't work on one of her cats, but does on the other!! So I suppose it's trial and error really, and try a lot of them until you find something that works.

I use Advantage which works well for my cats. It's ~£10 for 4 treatments here: http://www.animeddirect.co.uk/advantage-40-for-small-cats-small-dogs-and-pet-rabbits-under-4kg-pack-of-4-pipettes.html but weigh the cats first as you may need the stronger one (it's about 30p more).

Like many people I found that Frontline stopped working very quickly.

I also used Indorex. It's £8.60 on Animed Direct but you might be able to find it cheaper elsewhere.

As mentioned, steer well clear of Bob Martin products. https://www.facebook.com/BobMartinUK Read posts by others for more info.
