Car Insurance going to cancel my policy!

Hi

I bought a vehicle from a local dealer, waited 4 weeks for my V5 but didnt receive it in that time my insurer asked me to send them a copy of my V5 (Which I didnt have)

I contacted the DVLA and they said that the dealer had only just sent the V5 in (In there name) this was at the end of week 4.

So I decided I would send a V62 in which could take 4-6 weeks to process.

Now my insurer has said they will be issuing a 7 day cancellation notice this wednesday and would only be able to give me an extended time of 1 week!.

I sent my V62 off to DVLA last tuesday (7th October).

Out of curiosity I did an insurance quote with the box 'have you ever had insurance cancelled' and it gave me figures in the £3500 mark which is totally unaffordable for me and somewhat unfair giving the fact this is not my fault.

I have tried contacting the DVLA and there lines have been busy all day so what are my options?

A) Can I cancel my insurance within the 7 day notice and therefore having cancelled it myself avoid having to declare it?

B) Cancel my insurance before Wednesday to avoid it being cancelled

C) Explain to the DVLA and what would they actually do?

I need my car for work and without it would only end up back on JSA which seems totally unfair since I fail to see how this is my fault as I waited for the 4 week time period that DVLA advises.

I have contacted the dealer as to why he has registered in his name and got no sense out of the chap what so ever!

Have you actually spoken to the insurer, and told them that - whilst you'd love to send them a copy of the V5C, you can't because you haven't actually got it yet...?

(I'm intrigued to know why the insurer wants it, actually, I've never ever been asked to send one through.)

I was on the phone today to which I pointed out that the V5 is not proof of ownership however they need to know who the registered keeper is and therefore should they not receive the V5 by next Wednesday my insurance will be cancelled.

    The insurance company is WiseDriving.

Have you actually told them that you only just bought the car and so havent yet received the V5?

Sounds more like you were being a bit of a smart !!! to them pointing out ownership -v- keeper which is never going to make someone want to help you or cut you slack

If you cancel the policy before the deadline then there is nothing that you'd need to declare in the future but inevitably there will be cancellation charges to pay, though a tiny fraction of a life time of having to declare a voided policy

    From their website!

"The installation engineer will need to see the V5 registration document, Driving Licence of the main policyholder (both photocard and green counterpart) plus proof of your No Claims Discount. If you do not have your V5 and Driving Licence, the engineer will be unable to install the box, you will need to rearrange your installation appointment and we will charge a £45 missed appointment fee".

What about the greenslip the dealer gave you?
if they are truly playing hard ball then yes you cancel before they do!! Before the Wednesday as well. To be on the safe side. You'll just have to treat the charges as one of those things or ask the car dealer to contribute. Check the terms though about how much of a refund you get and cancel before you hit a lower refund bracket costing you even more

Lovely, an' all. But - going back to the question I actually asked...?

Playing that sort of semantic game with them is only going to raise their suspicions.

Aha. That explains why they need the V5C. They need to know that you're authorised to have the driving-monitoring box fitted.

I guess the risk to them is this gets pushed back and back and back and they need to draw a line at some point as having the box installed will affect the risk they are exposed to so they want it installing sooner rather than later.

Don't understand why a receipt and greenslip wouldn't suffice though. But you need to make sure it isn't cancelled as you have already seen how much that'll screw you
