Paypal payment refund

I bought something recently through a facebook group via paypal. Unfortunately item was not as described, so the seller agreed to refund me. They have messaged me tonight to say they couldn't figure out how to refund, so have sent the payment back to me gifted.

Is this going to be a problem as it is still open to chargebacks?

It's mainly a problem for them as you can still get the original payment refunded from your end

Any paypal gift transaction can be reversed when someone claims unauthorised

If the seller doesn't understand how to use paypal then the likelihood of him trying to scam you by claiming unauthorised gift (after you can no longer get your original payment refunded) is very low.


I once made a small profit with a clueless seller who sold me an item (cash equivalent at a discount), didn't send, then decided to refund the entire value of the item as gift; then relisted the item. I used the gift payment to rebuy the item. Obviously I should have withdrawn the money and then used my card to rebuy.
