Why? There are other websites for gossip, chit chat and general stuff
I agree that this site should be only for money saving related topics. Would you post comments about Stehen Nolan winning an award on a holiday related forum or a relationships forum?
If you want to natter about anything and everything under the sun then do your research and post your views/comments/witty asides on the appropriate Forum rather than inflict them on the rest of us.Val0 -
I personally love MSE and the NI forum in particular. This section has some fantastic members with a wealth of knowledge and humour. I really enjoy various posts from members such as WarmHands, DA, Motorguy, Ballyblack, Old Git, Shaz, Quert, GlynD, BigAl, Saverbuyer, Tara747, Eamon, Lazer and many many more whom I have forgotten (Steve from LD springs to mind). It's the members who have made this a community forum rather than simply a money saving forum. This section evolved a long time ago and MSE recognised this and approved it.
The forum is now richer as a result, we can still get as much financial advice as we need but we can also discuss, debate and inform on a range of issue of which some of course will be more interesting than others.
The rules are that non money saving items are allowed and past experience shows these are the most popular topics. If you're not interested in them ignore them, however since we have such a great, vibrant, funny and very helpful community here - please don't seek to impede it.0 -

This is just a repetition of an argument made previously. As a result of the previous argument the NI Subsite became very dreary as there is insufficient moneysaving or finance related stuff being posted to keep anyone interested in checking on a regular basis. This means it would be possible to actually miss a great finance or money saving opportunity or a deadline to grab the opportunity.
When I read a newspaper I will read the articles which grab my attention and ignore the ones which don't - I make this judgement based on looking at the article headlines. I don't however waste time and energy writing to the editor and asking him to remove the articles which fail to grab my attention.
It has previously been stated that "discussion time" is the proper subsite for posts which are not related to finance and moneysaving, and it has also been accepted generally that there is no harm in placing such items in the NI forum for items of discussion which may be NI specific.
It is my personal belief that the people of Northern Ireland often show complete disregard for compromising and accepting that they cannot dictate what can and cannot be done. I would hope that this applies to no one who reads or contributes to the NI Forum on this website.
I am intensely interested in things financial and moneysaving, I am also interested in all things N Ireland, and in getting to know a bit more about the lives and interests of my fellow posters. I welcome open discussion with these posters, and I welcome the diversity of material which makes the NI Forum a place I look forward to checking out very regularly.
I hope many of you agree and are happy to see the diversity continue, enabling you to just skim over the headlines that you have no interest in.John0 -
The thread makes no sense at all. Rockman has stated on numerous times that he/she disagrees with non money saving threads yet agrees with Irish John's post stating that there should be a suitable mix of money and non money saving threads. Rockman even starts another non money saving thread on the NI forum about a restaurant.
Other contradictions include BigAl who disaproves of non money saving threads yet happily engages in them when them come up e.g. "cat tags".0 -
Fairly tenuous link, but I believe the Nolan thing has some mse relevance as he's reputed to have a buy to let empire worth a fraction of what he paid for it.
Maybe that comment about "house in order" was meant to read "houses in order".“What means that trump?” Timon of Athens by William Shakespeare0 -
I am not 'dictating' as you put it. I am merely expressing my personal opinion that this site is about money saving not an 'anything goes site'.
Yes we all accept that there is wiggle room on most sites but when it gets to the stage, as it has on this site, where people are just posting topics about anything and everything then I think it is right that this topic originator highlighted the problem that it has recently started getting out of hand.
Surely the people who want to diversify into topics about all manner of things have to respect others who see the site as primarily about money saving.Val0 -

You have put forward this argument on numerous times before only for MSE and the majority of posters on here to overrule you - why do you persist?0 -

Make up your mind, abide by MSE rules which allows for non MS threads or move on.0 -

Do you feel it is wrong to ask the moneysaving focussed folks just to glance at the thread title and skim over those which are obviously not to their taste? No one is required to open and read every thread in the NI section.
I will always skim over any child related ones as I would not consider myself child friendly - or good restaurant ones as I prefer to cook and eat my own cooking. I find that way of managing my reading works for me.John0 -

I'm sure if I could be bothered enough I could find non money saving threads started by you.
We have had this discussion time and time again - and the result was that most are happy to have some Non Money saving discussions here.
If a discussion is NI specific, it belongs here IMO.
The black mountain thread for example - This thread would disappear on the main discussion board, it NI specific though, so its fine here.Weight loss challenge, lose 15lb in 6 weeks before Christmas.0
