A problem with the Pilot switch yet he cut off the central heating and hot water.
No leaks or smell of gas ? Does the property have a CO alarm near the boiler?
Why can you not use the gas fire ? Time for a onesie and congrats on the pregnancy

I am afraid temporarily you will have to do what most of us do when the boiler breaks.., boil water in a kettle or saucepan to wash up, and visit friends and relatives for a shower etc.

Obviously keep on at the LL.., but I have another tight LL example and you might have to manage. You could try contacting environmental Health but they might not be able to prod the LL into action before you move out.., and their reaction is unpredictable. I suppose you could threaten your LL with contacting environmental health as IF they did react it could possibly cause problems with his proposed sale (certainly having the boiler disabled should) but he may be one of those particularly blase LL's who still won't get moving. However doing this kiind of thing might also make the LL create as much delay as he can in giving you your deposit back.

My LL is saying he is going to sell, valuer coming round end of he week and I have a boiler with a temporary repair.., none of the digital stuff shows as the wrong circuit board was put in temporarily months ago. It does work though. I am just crossing everything that the valuer notices.

Its not likely but I will have hysterics if he had to plug something into a socket in the kitchen and trips the fuse box (only one plug works in the ktichen). Maybe I should invite him to make himself a coffee lol.

When I contacted environmental health about a number of issues here, they just sent a mildly worded letter to my LL.., they didn't even visit. I then received a very irate letter from my LL who tried to force me to write to EH saying there were no problems.

I can't believe what wimps people are these days. We had no central heating at all when I was a child - a coal fire in the living room and paraffin heaters taken to other rooms when necessary. A hot water bottle in bed.

In the winter of '63 the only tap that worked was one in the road fed from a spring and the toilet outlet froze up! The snow started on Boxing day and melted in March.

  • Hiya all,
Dimble-yes it was working before he came. We do have a co alarm that's about a metre away from the boiler, that hasn't gone off or anything.

Dean- thanks for your help, I will deffo do that and Im getting onto my letting agency first thing. It's so frustrating as I'm sure my LL would moan when he constantly has a cold nose and cold feet! I sleep in my dressing gown, with two duvets and two pairs of socks on!

Elsewhere - let me dig a medal out for you. Can I just say I have NO heating. Not even paraffin heaters or a fire. Well done for surviving a winter.

    Thnks everyone X

... and you don't have to survive a winter, only another three weeks at worst.

So the fire was working before he came and he did not identify any problem with it. Ergo it is safe to use.

Alternatively get down Argos and buy a cheap heater. £25 should get you a couple of kW.

Nor me, we had icicles on the inside of our windows. However, why should people put up with that now? It's awful not having heating and hot water. In 1963 it was also commonplace that there was an adult at home all day to manage fires and get houses warm.
Never again will the wolf get so close to my door

Posting how brave you were back in '63 is not all that helpful.

I'd certainly contact Environmental Health and put pressure on the landlord anyway I could but I'd also use the gas fire to help a bit.
  • Hiya all,

I've rang the letting agency and they've assured me someone will get back to me with a solution. I got quite stressed on the phone. I said I'm sorry as I know it's not your fault but I can't have a bath.

He also said its a basic living requirement and that legally he can't leave us without heating and hot water - so being wimps has nothing to do with it.

I'm going to see if I can find a number for enviromental health now
    Thanks
    Xx

And this is helpful to the OP how? It's not 1963 anymore.

OP - glad the agency were helpful, fingers crossed it gets fixed soon. I know it's not ideal but are you a member of a gym or have showers at work you could use in the interim? Or nice neighbours??

Also agree with other posters about buying a temporary measure. Oil filled radiators give out a fair bit of heat? You could charge the cost back to the landlord (I'm sure someone more knowledgeable will confirm if this can actually be done or not!)
