Car insurance to include business cover

Options
I renewed my car insurance a couple of weeks ago. My cover included social, domestic, pleasure and commuting.

I've just started a new job and my employer has told me I need to have business insurance. I went online to add this and it gave me the options of adding 'personal business use' and on top of that, if I wanted to, I could add 'employer's business use'.

I was unsure whether I needed to add 'employer's business use' or if 'personal business use' covered what I needed. I asked an online advisor and they said personal business use would be sufficient for my needs. I have now added that but when I look at the wording I'm not convinced it's sufficient. I asked the advisor what the difference was but he didn't explain it very well.

They define personal business use as 'All of the above, plus personal business use: This cover includes social, domestic and pleasure use, commuting and personal business use of the policyholder and their domestic partner only'. Doesn't that mean it covers you for your own business, rather than your employers?

I want to make sure I have the right cover and am very confused so would be grateful if anyone in the know could advise.

What's your profession and what will you be using the car for business wise?

Sounds ok. Class 1 is usually you and spouse. Class 2 would be any named driver.

Your insurers have said its ok so I would check if your employer is happy with it.

I work for a charity and will be based at a hospital. I will occasionally have to travel to other locations for courses.

I will be driving in the course of my work but that will be using the charity's vehicle. I don't really understand why I need business class insurance at all but they have said I do.

Looking at that it does seem that the cover I have taken will be sufficient. Aviva doesn't actually name it as Business Use:Class 1. Plus I think when the terminology is 'the business' it makes it sound as though you will be using it for your own business - a company you own - rather than in the course of work for your employer.

I did get Aviva to send me the transcript of the online talk with their advisor, which should help if there turned out to be any query on it.

Commuting is usually travelling to one place of work. If you are using your own car to travel to other locations then you need business use. Using the charity's vehicle is not relevant.

Are you paid a mileage allowance for travel to other locations? This can also be a trigger for needing business use as you are being paid per mile for business trips.

It sounds as though they are covering their backs as it could be argued that as you are traveling to another of their sites (hospital) to work may fall under the business use requirement.

On the other hand it may be that they also expect you to use your own vehicle at times.

Yes, I will be paid mileage if I travel to other locations.

They have now said I may need to use my own car occasionally.
