How about a headtorch?
One of the Citroen 2CV variants had the interior light focused on the speedo for night driving0 -
Isn't this an MOT failure ?Speedometer
For vehicles first used on or after 01 October 1937
The glass being cracked is not a reason for failure providing there is no possibility of misreading the speedometer, no possibility of the indicator needle being fouled or the cracked glass being a safety hazard.
Will be checked for:- Presence
- Condition
- Can be illuminated

In a lit mot bay I doubt you'd notice unless a lot weren't working.
It can be illuminated, some bulbs come on.0 -

He just needs to leave his headtorch where the tester can find it.0 -
Car has been thorugh MOT recently and there was no issue.
There is some light on the dash, mainly to the area where the temp or rev counter is. But the important area of your speed is complete dark.0 -
Try some of the Ford forums, The info is there. Honestly its not a difficult job.
Some of the guys have it down to less than 20 minutes, The ones that fit different coloured lights and LEDs and then change their mind 2 days later.
Just make sure you buy 504's and not 501's.
501's draw more power. You do not want to fit them. But they appear identical.Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0 -
personally i'd not be wanting to take the unit out as its all fragile stuff and cant get upset if moved etc
either a plug in boy racer led style spot light
or
if you can just remove the glass / plastic and get at the needle you could paint glow in the dark paint on it
there are also plug in devices that can tell you your speed0 -
The bulbs behind my rev counter/temp guage havent been working for a few years on my Mondeo.
I only ever remember at night they need replacing - "I'll do that tomorrow.."
Then tomorrow comes and its light, so I forget lol..0 -
I have a mk3 mondy and the last time a garage replaced the dash bulbs cost me £20.
How much did the garages quote you for it to be too expensive?0 -

There is a reason why I was advised not to do it myself and the above may be it.
Apparently it's not just a case of having a screwdriver and doing it.0
