Hi all
I started the process for claiming bank charges a while ago, over the past 6 years I've had 3 accounts with Natwest, I had statements for part of that with charges coming to around #1750, I used the estimate workings out and sent them the first letter stating that I was due more than #3000 in bank charges and gave them 14 days. nothing was heard! I then sent the second letter which they replied to saying that they would send me free of charge all statements for the past six years, nothing heard for ages (about 3 weeks!), they then sent me three letters saying that on one account they couldn't find any charges, on my Advantage gold account they would make a goodwill gesture of #704 and on the other account they would make a good will gestur of #130, I never received the statements that they promised and now don't know what to write back with, I'm NOT going to accept those amounts tho! what should I do as I haven't a clue now as the letters that are on the site don't seem to correspond with this sort of thing of them promising statements, them never materilising then them making a stupid offer..help!!!!!! Hi, Thanks for the advice. So even though I have started the process and they have made me an offer I really need to go back to the beginning so that they actually send me the statements by paying the #10? As long as I get my money, I'll do it!!!! Thanks again.0

As you estimated your charges its could the that its not such a stupid offer so that is why you need to start at the beginning and work out the charges properly.
Although I would phone them and ask if the statements are on their way as they tend to send out in batches.0 -
Hi<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" /><o:p></o:p>
<o:p></o:p>
I think I understand your problem... Firstly it's hard to just estimate the amount of charges applied to any account... Very hard if the charges go back a year or more!<o:p></o:p>
<o:p></o:p>
Do not guess the amounts, you need to get the statements from your bank so, request them again... You can get the "Financial Ombudsman" to write to your Bank. The bank will normally get back to you quickly. (See link below)<o:p></o:p>
<o:p></o:p>
www.financial-ombudsman.org.uk<o:p></o:p>
<o:p></o:p>
Get the phone number from "Contact Us" then phone up... Make sure you have your Sort Code, Account Number, Bank address for each bank you are trying to reclaim charges for.<o:p></o:p>
<o:p></o:p>
Make an offer to collect the statements from the local branch (As they may be a lot and heavy) you are entitled to these under the "Data Protection Act" give them time to respond to your request...<o:p></o:p>
<o:p></o:p>
Calculate the correct amounts involved this is VERY important because latter your claim will need to be able to rely on the accuracy of the claim.
<o:p> </o:p>
When all the both have been followed you will be able to start your claim follow to stages make your own decisions, remember Banks will try to scare you? DON’T be if you go to “Money Claim Online” it’s very easy straight forward…
<o:p> </o:p>
All The Best.

OK cool, think I'll start from the beginning then and make sure I claim for exactly what I'm owed! Thanks for all your help. Will call them tomorrow!0

Just to clarify a few points. All banks can and do charge per copy statement that is why it is important you don't write or ring the bank for copy statements but send Martin's letter which asks for all information held on you under the DPA and for this they are entitled to charge you £10.
If you don't get this information within the 40 days the bank are allowed you then report them to the Information Commissioner http://www.ico.gov.uk/
All the information and template letters that you need are in Martin's article
http://www.moneysavingexpert.com/reclaim/bank-charges
and the Reclaim Help Thread gives further information.0
