TSB CC direct Debit

HI everyone,

hoping someone can help me and my partner as this has really annoyed me.

My Partner has a credit card with TSB and has done for a few years. He has set up a direct debit for a fixed amount every month so that he is always paying at least the minimum amount.

A couple of weeks ago we used the card to pay for a vet bill and as soon as we got home partner realised he had went over the limit and called TSB straight away to pay whatever he was over into card. The person on the phone assured him he wouldn't face any late payment fee.

He then gets his statemement at the weekend with a late payment fee and had to pay a further £65 because they didnt take his direct debit of £40 and had to pay a further £25 to avoid any charges next month.

He called TSB who returned the late fee. But I thought that the point of a direct debit is to ensure you never miss a payment and that at any point through the month you can pay money to it.

Can someone explain how the system works because I can't get my head round it.

(PS CC is now cut up and wont be used again)

  • Is it definitely a DD - or a standing order?

Were there sufficient funds in the account?
  • hi definitely a DD and yes sufficient funds in account.

They said something like because he made a payment they didnt take the DD.

Something similar happened before because he made a payment to early and missed the minimum payment.

We wante dthe DD to always pay the minimum and to be ble to pay in any extra ny time we want but that doesn't seem to be the case.
  • Some cards have a policy where manual payments then reduce the DD. But it should still take anything required to make up the minimum if the manual payment isn't enough.

It sounds like an error, but you'll need to talk to them.
