I have an Amazon a Kindle Fire HD and have never paid for a book yet, I get all my free books from Amazon posted directly to my Kindle.
I also have a Kobi but find downloading very time consuming and you don't get many free books as the Library doesn't stock much for the Kobi.

I can read mine in bed all snuggle and warm......can't beat it.:D

  • Another vote for an e-ink device here.

Wait... where are all the usual people advocating e-ink? Just me and mttylad? Quite strange.

I love tablets. I have a 9" Nook HD+ tablet which is so wonderfully versatile. Its high-res screen makes it a complete delight to use for a whole range of activities, from movies and games to web browsing and reading magazines.

I love PCs. I have a desktop PC with a delightful 26.5" 1200P monitor as well as a new Acer R7 hybrid laptop that can fold around into a bizarre tablet mode - a 15.6" 2.3KG "tablet", but a tablet nonetheless - and its exquisite 1080P IPS screen is a delight to use for games, office work, web browsing, movies and all sorts (although it mostly gets used for funny cat pictures).

I love smartphones. I love the convenience of having a computer in my pocket at all times, a portal into the Internet that allows me to keep up with my emails, even mess around with Office documents in a pinch; that lets me do my Internet shopping while I'm dropping the kids off at the pool; plays a few decent games; and even lets me read documents and webpages when I'm stuck somewhere with nothing to do. I have a Note 2, chosen for its high specs and great 5.5" screen.

I love all of these devices, and all of them can read eBooks. I've even installed the Kindle app on all of them and done some reading on each one.

But for linear reading, nothing even comes close to a dedicated e-ink reader. They are a world apart. I initially "invested" in my Kindle K3 as a way to save money, about four years ago (it paid for itself within 12 months). I really did think that I'd be accepting a lower-quality reading experience in order to save some cash. To this day I'm still amazed that I find it superior to real books.

E-ink. Do it! (Especially if you read at night, as you won't be wanting to stare at an active screen just before you sleep, now, will you?)
Q: What kind of discussions aren't allowed?
A: It goes without saying that this site's about MoneySaving.

Q: Why are some Board Guides sometimes unpleasant?
A: We very much hope this isn't the case. But if it is, please make sure you report this, as you would any other forum user's posts, to forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com.
