Quickest way to transfer files from one pc to another

Whats the quickest way of transferring large movie and music files from my old pc to my new pc?

Thought of burning them to cd but that will take ages. Dont have DVD writer on old pc.

Is it a case of usb lead between the two? Presume that too simple!

Thanks for your help in advance.

    USB - no, unfortunately.

I would whip the hard drive out of the old PC and install it to the new PC as a slave (you will need to set the jumpers on the drive - check the manual). You then easily drag the files from the old drive to the new one.

Alternative is to use a USB pen stick, if you have one. But watch the size of the files and ensure they will fit on the USB drive. If you don't have one, then installing the hard drive into the new PC will be the only "free option".

You could network the two PCs together, but you'll need a network card in each and a crossover cable. Again, expense if you don't have one, but the cable is cheap at about £10. However, setting up the network can be a PITA ;)

If you want help installing the drive, post back.

you can actually get a usb to usb lead, but as others other options might be better

http://www.maplin.co.uk/Free_UK_Delivery/25600.htm is an example ( sure could get cheaper eslewhere)

I had one years ago, but had trouble with win98 drivers, believe future win versions faired better

could take dvd writer out of new one,put in old and write the dvd's then put back in new.
But I think debt-free-chicks idea with the hard drives is better.

get a DVD burner will end your problems for good - why, well AFTER you have transfered that big movie or album etc , it wont be long before you ask again on advice how to install bigger hard drives!

burn them on to DVD , burners are cheap, dvd disk are dirt money (2 for a quid! and it holds over 4G!) and its SAFE

Take the DVD burner out of your new PC and put it in your old one & install the software then burn everything you want. then reinstall in new computer & load

You'll end up with a backup of everything you want to keep.

Of course if old computer is not to be used anymore then just whip it out and install it as a slave in your new computer and you won't even have to worry about copying

Alternatively go onto e-bay and look for a "usb hard drive box". buy that and stick your old hard drive into it, then connect to the new computer and copy the files across it's a lot cheaper & easier than trying to set up a network - it also means you don't have any warranty problems

USB to USB transfer is possible, but only worth it if both computers have USB2 ports.
The fastest transfer method would be to remove the hardrive from your old computer and temporarily add it to your new computer.
