Help..! Locked Ipad mini

Any Ipad experts out there please. I need your help.
My son has accidentally locked his Ipad Mini by typing the wrong passcode too many times.
We now have the correct passcode but cant seem to reset the screen to allow us to do so.
We have the following on the Ipad- 'Ipad is disabled. Connect to itunes.'
When I try to connect to itunes I get the following message - 'Itunes could not connect to the ipad "xnamex" because it is locked with a passcode. You must enter the passcode on the Ipad before it can be used with Itunes'

Which I cant do as the ipad is disabled.

Also is it worth trying to connect to itunes if the device has never been sync'd to it?
Any ideas on what I can do here without losing all the data on it to a factory reset?

Ring Apple, look for a normal number on Saynoto0870, I am sure they will help even if out of warranty, they helped me with an old iPhone 4s when it had locked up, and helped me get back into it.
I had a 10 minute queue, but used one of the special numbers like 18185 @1p a minute so thought it was worth 10p

You need to connect to iTunes in recovery mode. Disconnect from the PC and turn off the iPad. Now hold the home button down while you connect, and keep it held down until you see a message saying "an iPad in recovery mode has been connected".

Then you can restore the iPad. I don't think there's a way to keep the data, though if you've backed it up to iCloud, you can restore that
