LED lighting

As we are replacing light fitting in kitchen for downlights should we go for LED. In B&Q were told we could buy standard halogen downlights like these and replace bulbs with LED gu10 bulbs.

Is it that simple?

yes and the LED's last for years, but they are a lot more expensive than Halogen and there a lot of poorly manufactured fakes.

Yes, I've just replaced my kitchen spotlights GU10 halogen with LED's. The halogen's that the spotlights came with only lasted a couple of weeks.

I got the LED's from Amazon, they were quite expensive - £39 for 10, but the reviews were good so they should last. I wouldn't bother getting cheap LEDs from ebay.

Well buying 6 spotlights from B&Q is £30 and 3 sets of 2 LED bulbs is £24. Compared to buying LED light and surround for about £14 each.

Yes. We replaced 50W Halogen GU10 bulbs with 3.5w LEDs. No adapters required, they are a straight replacement. If anything the 3.5w LEDs are brighter than the the bulbs that they replaced. You need to think carefully about colour temperature. We bought Sebson.de warm white GU10s from the Sebson store on Amazon. So far, we are very pleased with our purchase. My wife appreciates the better light: I am pleased that when all 8 lights are on we are using 28w compared to 320w! That said, even though we have a large kitchen, we rarely have all the LEDs on.

Another option are LED downlighters - so similar to the GU10 downlights but they have been designed with the LEDs already built in, so probably fewer issues with over-heating/short-life than the retro-fit LED GU10s.

The issue with the all in one LED is that you cannot replace the bulbs you have to replace the whole unit and what if it doesn't fit the hole in my celling!!

I can get in B&Q the led unit and then the holder separately which is what I think I might do. Not the cheapest option but perhaps the safest.
