VAT exemption on adaptable bed

I am getting the higher rate mobility and have a disabled badge and today have bought an adaptable bed.
However, I understood that the VAT should not be charged by the supplier but the supplier has insisted that I need to claim the VAT back ... is this correct?
Thank you for any guidance.

No, the supplier should not be charging VAT if the bed is zero rated for the disabled.
It is possible to write to the supplier and request a refund. it is then up to the supplier to readjust his VAT records.
this might help

My understanding is that it depends whether the supplier has a VAT exemption for this bed. If it is a normal adjustable bed, which OP is buying for medical reasons, it's not unreasonable that OP might have to claim the VAT back themselves.0

You shouldn't have to pay VAT at all. All you do is sign a VAT exempt form stating you're disabled and you won't be charged VAT. I bought an adaptable bed nearly 2 years ago and explained to the supplier (normal bed supplier) that i'm disabled, he said you're VAT exempt and I said yes. When I paid for my bed I signed the VAT exempt form and that was it. There was no paying up front or claiming it back.
So when you pay for your bed, explain you're disabled and you're vat exempt and they should give you a form to sign, if they don't they still shouldn't charge you.Everything I know, I've learned from Judge Judy.

Thank you for your replies. I have contacted the shop where we bought the bed and they are emailing me back and apparently there will be an administration charge ... no idea if this is normal or not and again would appreciate any advice. Thank you.
