Challenging 'partially settled'

Hi all
I had a debt with Bank of Scotland, which I defaulted on due to unemployment in late 2009.
I called the 'solicitors' (I assume they were actually internal to HBOS as per) to pay in May 2010. I asked "how much do I owe" or "how much do I need to pay", looking to pay off the balance, was given a figure and then paid it. At no point did I say "I can't pay you and want to make a lower offer" as I could have paid it all off (thanks bank of dad!).
Turns out it was marked as partially settled. Contacted BOS to offer to pay the difference (maybe £400 on a £2-3k debt) and was told I couldn't. Sent a Subject Access Request to try and get proof that I simply asked how much I owed, HBOS say they can't provide it as it was paid to the 'solicitor'.
I just want to pay off the debt as I wanted to in the first place, and not have the 'partially settled' hanging over my head (recognise that there would still be a 'standard' settled default).
Anybody got any ideas as to next steps? All I want is to pay it off.
Cheers
