long or short term fixes?

We are on edf blue price fix March 2017, shorter fixes are of course cheaper. Is there any merit on staying on a longer fix..feeling very confused with this most basic of questions.

It all depends upon what way energy prices move .
    Up then probably yes .
Current energy market is static to downwards .

With a long fix you are just paying an insurance premium in effect in the hope you will beat any price rises .
You just got to keep using a comparison site to work out any potential savings bearing in mind any fees payable on early termination .
  • yeah I,m on npowers march 2017 fix, and thinking of coming off it for a 1 year deal as there seems to be a price freeze with some companys (SSE) for 1 till 2016, its just a question of do Npower have any plans to raise this winter.if not I may change

Your usages may well determine strategy. If you are close to average you may want to stick to shorter fixes as there will always be someone clamouring to be top of not the comparison sites but of the market survey tables.

If you are a high user then you have the advantage of not being affected by early termination charges.

If you are a low user things are more chaotic - npower have a very good long term electricity deal but the best gas tariff is a more problematic decision. Cashback may help but it is not like the olden days with free utilities from multiple switches per year. Plus many of the better tariffs are starting to be not available to gas only claimants (does not affect average and above users.)

(The days of bargain five year fixes are long gone.)

    (Probably.)
