Has John got an Amex card, yes or no?

Apologies if this has been asked and answered before.
I was thinking of applying for the Everyday Platinum Amex to get the 5% cashback for three months, and Martin's suggestion for getting more cashback is this:
(I'm really asking because I'm a secondary cardholder on DH's Amex card, through MBNA. I won't bother applying if we're not going to get that 5%!)
I was thinking of applying for the Everyday Platinum Amex to get the 5% cashback for three months, and Martin's suggestion for getting more cashback is this:
Use a joint card. Those in trusting relationships can max the gain. For example Janet applies making John 2nd cardholder so both get the intro 5% cashback. John applies, doing the same, to bag another three months 5%. After that, just use one person's card to reach the 1.25% cashback tier.
But you can't get the introductory discount if you've already got an Amex card, so when John applies, does he say 'yes' or 'no' to that question on the application?(I'm really asking because I'm a secondary cardholder on DH's Amex card, through MBNA. I won't bother applying if we're not going to get that 5%!)

The answer is "No" because they don't have an Amex account, only a complimentary card on someone else's account.
Although it is 5%, it is £100 maximum as it is only on the first £2,000 in those 3 months. However for you, as you already use an Amex card it will in reality be £75 (the £2,000 spend would have been spent on the other Amex card earning 1.25% cashback, so you are only getting an extra 3.75%).
Also don't forget that if he goes into his Amex account online and refers you, then you both get £25 for a successful application.0 -

You can't get the introductory cashback rate if you already have an Amex Amex Cashback card account.(I'm really asking because I'm a secondary cardholder on DH's Amex card, through MBNA. I won't bother applying if we're not going to get that 5%!)
Your DH has an MBNA Amex, not an Amex Amex.
You also have an MBNA Amex, but you don't have an MBNA Amex account as you're a supplementary cardholder. The answer is "No" because they don't have an Amex account, only a complimentary card on someone else's account.
The answer is "No", but not because of this reason.
Even if you only have a supplementary card, you may have had a main account before and they would still hold information on that. They would also have done a search on you when you were approved for the supplementary card, though only to see whether you had CCJ / CIFAS / bankruptcy records and not a full search
Therefore if you have an Amex Amex card, you should answer yes. But an MBNA Amex cardholder should say no as it is a different financial institution
Note that if you have an Amex Amex from a different country, you should still say yes as Amex can (and will) retrieve your credit history with themselves from Amex in the other country.
So "John" does have an Amex card, and he is also eligible for the 5% rate, as is anybody who has a BA Amex (which is an Amex Amex), an MBNA Amex, a Lloyds Amex, or an Amex issued in the USA.0 -
Many thanks both. Also don't forget that if he goes into his Amex account online and refers you, then you both get £25 for a successful application.
So I should apply through TopCashBack, but he should get the £25 discount if I introduce him in a couple of months time ... although I'm not sure he'll get one in his own name so we may stick with just the one.
Complicated, isn't it?Signature removed for peace of mind0 -

Sorry but with the problems the forums been having its not possible to see what the prior answers were
Only the account holder actually "benefits" from the promotion. So yes the spend from Janet and John on the primary and secondary cards both get the 5% cashback generated but all of that benefit goes to Janet.
When they open the second account in Johns name then both are still earning the cashback but its all paid to John. As each person only actually receives the benefit one each then they arent duplicating anything up.0
