Can I claim compensation

Evening,
I booked a holiday and specifically picked a certain hotel as my best friend was getting married there and 27 of her closest friends and family were also staying there, also as this was my sons (9 months of age) first holiday I thought it would also be handy to have other people around to help me out.
A week before we were due to arrive i thought i would email the hotel to ensure they would have the cot ready in our room as we were to arrive very late and didn't want the hassle of chasing for a cot on arrival. When they replied they informed me there was no reservation for me. After going back and forth the travel company two days before the holiday informed me that we didn't have a room but couldn't tell me why. If I hadn't of chased i would never have known and would have turned up in the middle of the night with a baby to no room! they offered me an alternate accommodation although this was too far away so had to cancel the room. Even on booking i double checked that we had the room requested and explained that we only wanted this hotel for the above reasons otherwise we wouldn't be going at all. They guaranteed this on the phone to me.
Can i claim compensation and how do i go about this. Considering the company refunded me for the room but took out a cancellation fee!! even though they took my money and didn't even get me a room i have to pay a cancellation fee i doubt very much they will give me any compensation, they are only atoll protected so wondered what my next stage would be if i get no joy from the company direct?
Thanks in advance for any help given

who did you book through?
from what you state I am unsure why they have charged you a cancellation fee?0 -
Hey I booked through teletext, I know I couldn't believe they charged me they took my money for a holiday they didn't fulfill and charge me for the mess up....😖0

https://www.trustpilot.co.uk/review/www.teletextholidays.co.uk lots of complaints about them on here... (And them replying)
Did you not get a confirmation email or letter?0 -
They should not have charged you a fee, and general policy on booking errors of this type (assuming you got a confirmation) is that they find you suitable alternative accommodation of equivalent or higher grade and pay for difference in costs?
I take it you have now travelled? What happened in the end? How did you pay and how did that differ from the original price? How far away from the original hotel
You cannot get compensation for what didn't happen, i.e. you didn't turn up in the middle of the night with no room to go to etc - you would need to prove your losses or argue for and then accept a reasonable goodwill gesture from them directly.0
