Garage recommendations Glengormley/Newtownabbey

Hello
I am just recovering from the shock of my visit to Kwik Fit for a brake inspection.

I knew I needed pads and hoped I did not need discs......

Well final quote was £425 for front and rear pads and discs and that was with the 15% discount !!!

Is it just me or is that a crazy price???

Please let me know what a reasonable cost would be and any recommendations for garage in Glengormley/Newtownabbey area.

fyi - car is a 2008 VW Golf
Thanks in advance :-)

Chances are it doesnt need discs.

    Kwikfit are notorious for that.

Front discs are about £40-50 a pair. Rears similar.

Pads front and rear about £20-30 each end.

Allow an hour per corner to replace discs and pads.

Funny, i work in Newtownabbey but i've never used a mechanic there. :(

    Sorry.

Use those figures as a yard stick though to what you should roughly be being charged

EJ Motors on Derry Road/Hightown Road
GC Service Centre on the Ballyclare Road.

Used both when Im not doing the work myself.

If you are closer to Ballynure direction try Gilpin Automotive - specialises in VW. I use Stephen quite often.
  • thanks joe - will try them out.

Magowans Tyres in Mallusk also do pads & discs - I've used them before and were cheaper than I expected.
  • Kwik Fit once quoted me over £700 for work, that apparently my car wouldn't pass the MOT without.

It passed a week later without any of the work, and 2 years later is still fine.

I use Fegans at the bottom of the Antrim Road for annual service now, near carlisle circus. Not Glengormley I know, but 10 minutes down the road, and they are very honest and good value.

  • Folks, an update.
I ended up getting brakes done at local garage in Glengormley, in my lunch hour - new front and rear pads -£100 fitted, no other work needed!
Kwik Fit are cowboys out and out !! UNBELIEVABLE.

For future reference, there's a garage up behind the old Lidl store opposite glengormley, doesn't look like much but very good and very reasonable. They did a couple of awkward jobs for me very quickly and cheaply. I left the car into them for a couple of days to fix an intermittant fault, they stripped most of the engine down couldn't find the problem and refused to charge me.
