I really like the Tesco Meat Free range. The mince is as good as Quorn and the 'chicken strips' are really lovely. I'm not keen on the beef-style stuff but I never liked beef much so that's probably why. The range of non-meat-style stuff is nice too e.g. goat's cheese and onion tarts (or something like that).

Tesco have a very good vegetarian section in the frozen aisle. For mince, I usually use the tesco own brand.

    Have a look on mysupermarket.
  • I think you may need to have a better look. LIDL do allsorts for veggies like, stuffed jalepino peppers, mozerrela balls, potato and spinach things etc. Theres a special cabinet with it all in.
Also dont limit yourself to all this stuff, dont forget theres beans, pasta, tinned tomatoes, pizzas etc as well.
Regarding quorn mince alternatives, have you looked in Holland and Barratt? theres dried soya mince in there.
Iceland is the cheapest for quorn items and Aldi also stock them as far as I know.
  • I'm veggie but don't eat the meat-like alternatives such as quorn etc.

I do find Aldi labelling to be better than lidl, particularly with cheeses etc.

I like Aldi's Macaroni Pies. I put a wee bit of grated low fat cheese on the top then zap in microwave for 2 mins. That's my quick meal, sometimes when I've been out running and have burnt some calories in preparation lol, but sometimes not.

Thanks for replies but I think my main question has confused some so I have renamed the thread, sorry. Some of those other suggestions look good and I'll look into those.

I'm specifically looking at meat substitute options (mince, sausages) that are not Quorn based.

I don't shop at Tesco but will buy some of their meat free mince to try out as suggested.

I did look at the H&B stuff but it seemed very expensive. If I can't find anything else will have a go at that as will be worth the expense if it is really nice.

    Thanks.

Don't forget the Holland and Barrett stuff is dry, so will make up much more once reconstituted.
  • Quorn disagrees with me, but I buy the Tesco meat free mince, and the new mince bolognaise mix, both from the frozen range. I buy several meat free things in Aldi - margarita pizza, potatoes au gratin, dry pasta ( much nicer than supermarket own brands), risotto.

    .

I use Asda, Meat Free Chargrill Style Burger Mix which is dried soya base and last time I bought it was I think 76p - I made four burgers with it.
Also I use a lot of ASDA Meat Free Savoury Mince dried soya about the same price.
they do other dried meat free things like sausage mix and falafel

I use the sainsburys meat free mince or Linda Mccartney mince which are both perfect for me. I think it does depend on how it's cooked though. I remember the first time I tried vegan mince the cooking instructions said to add water to it or something (i think it was asda but it was a while ago) and it was vile, but instead now I just stir fry it and it tastes a lot better. The dried TVP mince is pretty horrible in texture though...

For chicken pieces the Realeat ones from Holland and Barrett are the best for me, Asda ones used to be pretty good too but they've changed the recipe to add eggs, so I don't know what they're like now.

Any other meat free items, Frys from Holland and Barrett again are the best i've tried, I tend to buy a few things as treats when they have the buy one get one half price and it makes it better value. I've had the chicken nuggets, chicken burgers, steak style strips and hot dogs. Also the vbites fish fingers. I believe you can also get Frys at either ocado or waitrose, but I'm not entirely sure.
