My son's school (a first school) do this type of trip for the year 4's and year 5's. He went last year and will be going again in April 2015...
It is to a local outdoor centre (Malvern) which is about 20mins drive away. The trip is for 3 days,2 nights (although not really 3 days as they dont start activities until after lunch on the first day and they leave just after lunch on the 3rd day - so really it is 2 full days activities)
The cost is £165. I do think it is expensive and we struggle to afford it to be honest BUT all of his class go and when we asked what provision would be made at school if he didn't go (just out of interest really..),the answer was simply that he would be sat in the library, with reading books and textbooks as there was no room in the other classrooms for him
He went, he loved it. He is looking forward to going again.
And I am just sucking it up, in the knowledge that next year when he reaches Middle School, they go skiing in the first year at a cost of just over £750.:eek: Now THAT is expensive!Baldrick, does it have to be this way? Our valued friendship ending with me cutting you up into strips and telling the prince that you walked over a very sharp cattle grid in an extremely heavy hat?0 -
Several years ago now, DDs primary school asked for a ridiculous amount to visit a local museum for the afternoon, 10 minutes away and free entry to all. I asked for a breakdown of the costs per child and wasn't satisfied with school's response. I suspect those who were willing to pay subsidised those who's families weren't willing/able to pay. I ended up taking her myself.
I do think that schools should offer a breakdown of the costs as some outings are better value than others and I think it's quite reasonable that parents should know what they are paying for.
Haha - I agree with this... a year or so ago, son's school decided to go on a last minute trip (sent letters home Tuesday telling about trip on Thursday and demanding payment by the next morning!!) to a local nature reserve (hilled area with stone/bronze age something or other lol!) - The nature reserve is free (its literally 10mins drive away from school) and they were going for the day and taking packed lunch. So the only cost was that of the small coach/minibus picking up and dropping off. They wanted £27.50 per child.:eek::eek::eek::eek:
The trip went ahead because we live in an affluent area where parents generally have more money than sense and because the trip was apparently going to form the main focus of work/topic for the next 2 weeks of work, I paid it. But I hated paying it! I offered to take him there and drop him off etc but school refused and said that he needed to attend with the school etc. :cool:Baldrick, does it have to be this way? £310 for 4 nights at PGL 20 minutes down the road in July 2015.
They arrive at PGL on the Monday AFTER SCHOOL. They leave on Friday to get back to school at lunch time. So 3 full days.
Fancy a swap?!Who made hogs and dogs and frogs?

Ouch! Better get saving now! :rotfl:
My son's school have a trip in year six which costs around £300 for 5 days away, which although is a lot in one go it works out at £60 a day for travel, accommodation and tonnes of activities so when you break it down it's not so bad.
Does anyone else think it's funny that you can get fined/criminal record for taking your kids out of school for a holiday, but they can go on a school holiday at a large cost with no consequence? :rotfl::rotfl:0
