Whether you have to make an appointment depends on your GP surgery.

It doesn't matter if your sick note overlaps. As long as there's no gap, it should be fine.

Make an appointment with your GP as soon as you can and explain that you do need continuous certificates. It shouldn't be necessary to tell a GP that, they should realise the importance! Ask if they can issue a longer certificate due to the problems in getting appointments. Also make sure the new certificate runs from the end date of the current one.
ESA will extend the certificate to your next paydate anyway if it's no more than 10 days after the end date of the certificate. For example, your certificate runs out on the 10th of the month and your paydate is the 18th, the certificate will be extended to the 18th. The idea is to minimise delayed payment. It also allows longer to get the new certificate.
If you're not sure when your current certificate expires call ESA to check.

Your paydate is based on the last 2 digits of your National Insurance number. 00 to 19 is Monday, 20 - 39 Tuesday, 40-59 Wednesday etc.
If you got your sick note in late it's entirely possible that your payment will hit the bank late.

Don't call ESA. Make a note of your sick note dates on your calander when you get it, and call your doctor if you don't know the date it expires. ESA are likely to give you incorrect expiry date information, and they have better things to do than tell people when their sicknotes expire, don't log-jam the ESA phonelines for something which is between you and your doctor.

Likewise, ESA is not your bank customer service line, asking ESA "Has my payment gone into my account today?" Why don't you look in your account or phone your bank before phoning ESA?

For one thing, phoning your doctor or your bank will be quicker and cheaper for you.

Depends what you mean by OK,
Depends what the dates of your 1st sicknote were
Depends on the last two No.s of your Ni no.

Can you stick to one thread please?

The GP won't know if ESA have extended the existing sick note to the next pay date, only ESA will have that information. I certainly agree about making a note on the calendar for future reference.
I don't understand why you say ESA will give a wrong date, the end date for the certificate is shown on screen.

That information is irrelevant to the claimant, the whole point of extending is that the claimant has sufficient time from the date of actual expiry to get a new cert delivered to ESA. The doctor will know for sure the date of actual expiry.

Because the BC does not always enter full notes to show the date of issue and the length of the sick note. and therefore the date of actual expiry which is what the claimant needs to know. Telling the claimant the extended date does not do the claimant any favours.
