Years ago my OH used to really enjoy his Formula 1 racing games (I think it was EA Sports).

He had a steering wheel and foot pedal and used to play it on the PC driving around all the main race circuits. Anyway that PC broke down and when I upgraded my PC we thought he would be able to play on my old one. However, it just would not work whatever we tried (that was on XP).

I know absolutely zilch about computer games and just wonder what would be the cheapest option for him to be able to do his Formula 1 races? Would it be a via a Playstation or something like that, or is it best to opt for a game on the PC (which is mine and I do tend to hog:D)

I presume that his steering wheel and original games would be way out of date now and so we would have to start from scratch again.

Thought he would really appreciate something like this for Christmas.

Any recommendations greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

The cheapest option or least expensive is to find out if the current wheel and games would play on your PC, if thats a no go then possibly the PS3 (can be picked up cheap) option as you can get either F1 2013 or 2014 edition for the PS3 plus there are wheel and pedal sets on amazon like this for under £30, it also works with XP if you would like it as an option.

Or theres the Xbox 360 option, again the consoles can be bought cheaply second hand and the F1 2013/2014 games are available on the net.
  • x box is the way for this kinda thing, before I worked all hours I did that, pricier but worth it cause the processors are dedicated to the task in hand which is making sure your bloke never gets up, goes to work or does the washing up ever again !p

Do you still use the steering wheel and foot pedal on a Playstation/Xbox?

It's perfectly understandable....To answer your question. If you have no requirement for another PC, F1 on the PS3 would be an option. (It's not due for release on the PS4 until next year). Yes you can get a steering wheel and pedals for the PS3/4.
You can get a pre-owned PS3 console from 'Game' stores for around £100. See Here.... Search ebay for the Wheel and pedals or ask in 'Game'.....So, no need to be expensive.
Of course there are many more driving games available to keep him happy while you continue to hog your PC..;)

Can you re-write this in an intelligible form? Use punctuation and try to give some details of the operating systems/machines. I've read it three times and my head is spinning.....

Ok, my head is cleared now. :)

So, do you still have your old PC? Does it have any identifying details?

    :o:o:o:o:o:o Sorry!

Problem is that I know absolutely nothing about computer games.

Only thing I can remember about the old computer really is that it had XP operating system. It has been disconnected and shoved away for the past few years. At the time he did try downloading various patches and fiddling about with it, but nothing worked. So I think the X box / Playstation ideas are better.

Didn't know that it was so long ago.... What was the OS on the computer that did work? I though that you might just want to use your existing equipment.
But if you are prepared to get a console, it sounds like a solution.

Have decided to let him try and get it working on my computer:(

The existing steering wheel that he has is a Microsoft SideWinder, but is pretty old - probably about 10 years or so - so don't know if it will be compatible with Windows 7.

    Not compatible according to Microsoft.

Understeer is when you hit a wall with the front of your car
Oversteer is when you hit a wall with the back of your car
Horsepower is how fast your car hits the wall
Torque is how far your car sends the wall across the field once you've hit it

I just gave one away to a chap at work as I have a new wheel. Don't listen to Microsoft, it works a treat. Has native support on Windows 7/8 and any recent Codemasters games will fully support it (including the recent F1 series of games).

Microsoft hardware was the best in the business back in the day and the sidewinder wheel is still outstanding these days.
