Standing charges (npower)

Can someone give a better description than google for standing charges?
I need a better understanding of these charges particularly with npower, if you are with npower your input would be well received.

Ok I have just moved home, my previous electric bills were between £50 and £100 a month. I now have a letter from npower stating that standing charges are charged at £24.45 per day, that can't be right can it? (that's roughly £733.50 a month) please tell me I've got this wrong. It definitely says £24.45 per day on the tariff information page I have received, I'm hoping that's a typo or I've missed something. Please help I'm very worried.
