Blackberry playbook - how to charge?

Options
My nephew has been given a Blackberry playbook - never used since it was bought so the battery has run down completely. He wants to use it to browse the web, but we cannot seem to charge it. It is plugged in to my pc usb port using cable supplied and I have tried holding down the on/ off button for 20 secs and releasing, button screen flashes red, then green for a split second, then goes dead again. I cannot get anything at all to display on the screen.

Any suggestions?

Give it at least 20 mins to put something in to the battery before attempting power up then.
If that doesn't work then try a known working charger, and if that fails then the battery is probably U/S (most likely as your nephew hasn't used it since it was bought).

That is not what you have stated.

You need a proper mains charger. Any reason for posting under another username?

    Well spotted Nifty.

Back to the OP, if using a PC then you need to give it at least an hour before attempting power up. If using the proper charger then at least 20 mins as I already stated.

When the PlayBook gets discharged you have to use the OEM charger to boost it into life. The OEM charger gives a far higher output than most 5v chargers on the market. The USB port will normally only kick out around 500 milliamps which is insufficient.

Should have made clear, the only charger supplied with the playbook in the original box, was one which connected it to a usb port.

However, I did notice that my kindle mains charger was the same fitting so I plugged it in there and this time, the red light turned to green and blinked slowly. I left it overnight and this morning it is fully charged.

(Sorry for confusion. Was posting from friends pc, who recommended I ask here, and forgot to log in as myself.)

If you do need to buy a charger I'd get a Blackberry high amp one such as THIS - it's £3.19 from Amazon, known to charge the Playbook quickly as well as other micro USB phonesm comes with travel adaptors so ideal for the jet set plus it shouldn't burn the house down due to substandard crappy electronics that are often sold all over the place. I've had a couple of these and find them excellent.
