TRVs & thermostat

Hi there

I am trying to work out the best place to position my (wireless) thermostat.

I have TRVs on every radiator and towel rail in my house. I understand I am supposed to have one rad that is not on a TRV, so I need to nominate one of the TRVs to be locked in the 'always on' position instead to protect the boiler.

I understand conventional wisdom would be to have this 'always on' rad by the thermostat. But my issue is that the thermostat is currently in the hall, opposite the hall radiator. Having this one always on feels inefficient as I am heating the hall far more than I would usually need to heat it.

So I figure my two alternative options are:

- move the thermostat to the lounge, and make that always on, as it's the draughtiest room so takes the longest to get to temperature (and is where we spend a lot of time). However we have a wood stove in here. If I light that, it will heat that room more quickly and therefore switch off the heating to the rest of the house earlier? Any way around this? Or is it a good thing?

- move it to the kitchen, another room we spend a lot of time in. Will I have the same issue here if we do a lot of cooking and heat up the room, it will effectively 'cool' the rest of the house?

Any other suggestions for how I could get my thermostat and TRVs to work nicely together, ensuring that the heating comes on at a low enough temp to give the TRVs the chance to get their rooms to the temperature they should be at.

Many thanks!

I tend to move mine around the house with me as needed.. Ive also balanced the individual room trv's to go to the comfortable level that I like - Ie higher downstairs and set a little cooler in bedrooms to make it easier to sleep. that way the wireless is set to be warmer in the evening and cooler over night so isn't impacted if it is in the room for the evening or bedroom at night - and can be used as a little over ride should I need to be warmer or cooler in the room that am in at the time.

Even if I went from being warm in the room (because fire was also on), upto the bedroom where it was cooler and it needed that boost then it would only take five minutes or so to start picking up - so isn't too unbearable for that time that it takes..
  • take the trv off the hall rad, fix the stat to the wall, why on earth would you carry it from room to room ??
the rads should be sized to heat the rooms to diff temps, so you take the stat to bed & put it on 30d the room is never gonna get to that temp because the rad isn't sized to get to that temp, trv's are there to regulate the individual rooms so let them do their job & leave the stat on the wall !!
I'm only here while I wait for Corrie to start.

You get no BS from me & if I think you are wrong I WILL tell you.
