If I pay the default will it still fall off the file?

I have found on old debt from nationwide. It was defaulted nearly 6 years ago and it's about to fall off the file. How're I know it will still be there on their systems. If I pay it off will the default still fall off or would it extend it for another 6 years showing on the file?
