20 yrs old/left uni/job seekers allowance?

Hi

Wondering if anyone can advise. My son who is 20 was at uni last year and suffered really bad depression and was suicidal at one point!!

Anyway after much discussion, we have decided it is such a lot of money to borrow if he really is not enjoying the experience and that possibly he would be better off just living at home and working. Hopefully getting into some organisation and working upwards.

My question is this. Would he be entitled to Jobseekers allowance? I dont know anything about this and have never had to claim it myself. He lives at home with me and so I will now have to tell council tax as I currently get the single persons rate.

Any help most gratefully recieved. Also if I should be in the Jobseekers bit please move me.

If he has left University he can claim JSA, it will probably be income based JSA as I doubt if he has paid enough contributions for contribution based JSA.

if, as seems to be the case, his circumstances have changed due to his illness, he may also be able to get DLA. its def worth applying.

    Hi

The Jobcentre may ask for confirmation that your son is no longer at University.

The Uni may be able to help by providing a letter to state that your son has ended his University course (and confirm the end date).

Entitlement to JSA depends on many factors. Primarily, the Jobseeker must be able to, willing to and actively seeking work.

If there are sickness issues still, you may find that Income support / Incapacity benefit are a better option, although these will need to be supported by Medical evidence (ie a sick note).

    Hope all goes well.
