Credit card and pin sent to ex wife!

a certain building society I have been banking with for many years have sent my new credit card and PIN number to my ex wife's address. At first they accused me of trying to be fraudulent in my application and later said I had entered my wife's address on the application. Both of these are incorrect as up until this point I didn't know my ex wife's address. Today they have rung me admitting there mistake and that I did rightly enter my address in the system (I knew this as I applied through my on Line banking).
Can anyone tell me if I am likely to get any type of compensation for there mistake? Should I go to the ombudsman?
Luckily my ex wife and I are on good terms but it could have been a lot worse.....

If you get the stuff passed to you and manage to use it ok why would you need compensation? The bank have now admitted their mistake and presumably corrected it on their system...

This is disgraceful behaviour by the Bank especially trying to blame you for the error but no harm was done so if I where you I'd walk away from a lucky escape smiling :)
  • To make up for the multiple phone calls (at premium rate), dealing with my ex wife etc etc. what if I wasn't on talking terms with my ex wife? She could of quite easily ran up the card and left me responsible!

yes, but if she had she would have committed a fraudulent crime. she hasn't, you haven't lost out as a result, so aren't due any compensation.
but they might be persuaded to give you a few quid as a gesture. try your hand if you fancy it.

Work out what the phone calls cost you - add a bit in for the time you spent - ask for that.

sound about right. £50 would do it, i'd have thought.

i assume we are talking about Nationwide.

Natwest compensated me £75 for this inconvenience, and my card had only been sent to a previous address. Yours is a bit worse

To be fair to the Op I think that he should be reimbursed for the cost of calls and time but I'd see it as maybe £20 tops.

It was their mistake and while they owned up to it, they did try to persuade otherwise... As Planteria mentions if she had used it then it would have been fraud and she would be liable (I assume).

    Personally, I'd not bother though.

A few years ago I went to see my bank as I had not had any recent bank statements. They found out that an employee in the branch had set up a second account at my request but had incorrectly set it up with my old address, which was now a student house. Previously I was getting statements at my new address.

They advised me that it was a serious breach of data protection and offered me £100 there and then.

I went to my old house and was given post that had just piled up. I'd had a redirection for 6 months but this was 18 months later.

Amongst the junk mail and bank statements was a letter from HMRC including a cheque for a tax rebate.

    A worthwhile day.
