Another here who as a child took a box of food from school to a nominated elderly person. I do agree that nowadays it's not necessarily the elderly that are most in need so food banks seem like a better idea.

I agree with gayleygoo that donating money might make people feel pressured into donating more than they can afford plus it also distances it from what it's supposed to be about. I went to a church school and the sight of all the donations at the front of the hall/church would bring a lump to my throat that I doubt a notice pinned up on the noticeboard would.

Also, I don't see anything wrong with donating something that's been lurking at the back of the cupboard (provided it's still within date), somebody that's going hungry might be grateful for my impulse buy BOGOFs!

  • Ds's school has asked for money this year.
Our church has asked for non perishables to go to the local foodbank, including vegetarian baby food...

As we are giving to the local food bank we were asked to try and bring in tins, dried food etc.

I object to money because I am struggling myself but know if it falls on a hard week I could always get something from my store cupboard and the girls would not feel embarrassed.
Don’t put it down - put it away!
