You can do this at a number of banks but I'll mention some examples specific to my experience as there are too many.

IIRC I opened my First Direct 1st Account online. I wasn't asked to provide any further detail through paper correspondence.

I recently opened my first TSB Classic Plus current account to take advantage of their 5% interest on balances up to £2000. All done online and the account was immediately available for deposits after being accepted and registering. I received separate letters in snail mail with the activation code and the debit card to allow full banking functionality (withdrawals, setting up DDs and SOs, etc.)

I went to my medical man.
    ...
    he said:
“Well, what’s the matter with you?”
    I said:
“I will not take up your time, dear boy, with telling you what is the matter with me. Life is brief, and you might pass away before I had finished. But I will tell you what is not the matter with me. I have not got housemaid’s knee. Why I have not got housemaid’s knee, I cannot tell you; but the fact remains that I have not got it. Everything else, however, I have got.”
The only bank I know where you have to apply in person is Metrobank.

Pretty much every bank lets you apply for an account online. If they can't identify you automatically they may ask you to take some form of ID to a branch.

Ok any ideas where best to go when your in a token payment plan ? Small overdraft would be a bonus (200) bit not essential

Depends what you mean by "all done". 99% of all banks and building societies offer online applications and if you pass the electronic ID verification they will normally tell you immediately whether your application was successful. One bank that still insists on postal application for current accounts is Yorkshire/Clydesdale Bank, and there are one or two no-name ones that only accept applications in person.

Obviously you cannot obtain a debit card and PIN online, and you will normally also have to wait for some of your online access information to arrive by post. If you want to do telephone, you also need to wait for some access information by post.

I would never put any money into any bank account unless I have a confirmed means of withdrawing my funds, such as faster payment or a debit card.

If you are on a TPP, you are in all likelihood only eligible for a basic account, and they don't come with overdrafts.

Your likelihood of being granted an account with an o/d is remote if you're making token payments to other creditors.
