Redundancy, self employed and paternity as a separated father to be.

Hi

This is a weird one. Last week I was made redundant and the company went into liquidation. I went for an interview the same day and got a job on a self employment basis. Which is good :) but my ex girlfriend is expecting my child in January and I planned to take some time off to bond with my baby after the birth. My previous company were ok with this but I have not said anything to my new employer yet as it didn't come up in the interview and I have literally only just thought about it. What I am asking is, is there anything I may be able to claim if I do take Time off work? I want bonding time with my baby, I can't afford to earn no money for 2 weeks and I don't want to burden my employer financially, what options (other than try and save for those 2 weeks) do I have?

I am afraid that there is no entitlement to paternity leave for the self employed

Are you sure you are self employed as you talk about your new 'employer'?

Having said that you have to have been working for 26 weeks in your new employment anyway to be entitled.
