removing paint from UPVC

The people before us (bless them...) had managed to get quite a lot of paint on to the UPVC double glazing frame of one particular window. How can I get it off without damaging the UPVC underneath?

I've tried a razor scraper, but unless you're really careful you end up scratching the plastic. I've tried fine sandpaper, I've tried fine wire wool, I've tried one of those green plastic pan scourers, I've tried white spirit. I'm eroding it slowly. But - there must be a better way?

I thought about trying green Nitromors - heaven knows it's so weak these days it's unlikely to damage the plastic, and it might just soften the paint enough. But I'm worried I might damage the plastic after all.

What would you do?

When I did ours I just used a washing up sponge scourer. I had a bowl with some cleaner in it and wiped down windows, let it soak a bit then used the green scourer side to get the paint off. Just need to use some elbow grease and it will come off. (It didn't leave any scratch marks). I've also used toothpaste to get marks off upvc frames too, just rub it over and it will come off.

I would try CIF, once the worst of it is scraped off :)

Cellulose thinners - the best thing ever for cleaning upvc inside and out, just try not to get it on the glass and wipe off all residue immediately

    It does stink tho !:(

Flash Magic Erasers, they worked on my plastic windows perfectly but they do crumble readily so buy enough for the job in hand. Try places like Poundland.
ETA they just need water, no abrasives or chemicals
  • Thanks all. Will give it a go tomorrow.
