British Gas Damaging Rating - What To Do????

Hi all,

I have been addicted to improving my credit rating for a while - doing everything I can to make it all sweet and beautiful.

I realized last month that I did not have down all of my addresses on Experian, I suppose due to not being on the electoral role on all of them so I updated them.

I checked my rating this morning and to my HORROR, there were 2 defaults with British Gas. It says over the two defaults I owe £600.00, I have only ever been with them at my previous address and left there in 2013. I have never received any correspondence from them before - if I had, they would have been paid but to my knowledge, I paid EVERYTHNG off before I handed the keys over.

I cannot find anyone to call as I do not have a reference number or anything and there does not seem to be any BG debt contact - Please help - I am absolutely gutted about this, the default was registered in May apparently and only just appeared on my file - is this £600.00 just about to destroy my borrowing abilities???

I feel like my world has just crumbled - it became a minor addiction, to improve my rating, it feels like I have just had something I had been collecting stolen.

If you're under the impression that the account was successfully settled in full then I'd get in contact with them and find out what's going on. Even if you don't have a reference they should be able to find you using your surname and postcode.

A settled default looks better than a default.

Since I got bitten by Virgin Media for a missed payment when I moved (even though I also confirmed that the account was settled), I *always* redirect my mail for at least 6 months as a precaution to ensure that I get any letters or notices about unpaid termination fees and other unsettled balances.

If it comes to light that this was an administration glitch and the defaults were registered in error, you could appeal to have them removed else it's as you've suspected I'm afraid.
  • Eek - I better get on that telephone as soon as I finish work - it makes me feel like my world is falling apart - I hope that it is an administrative error, getting something like this on my report purely because I assumed it was all fine and paid up was a silly, silly mistake!
