they made an error and now we're left with an amount to pay which we weren't expecting.

You were always expecting to pay the amount though, as you knew how much your holiday would cost and you were happy with it. Yes they made an error, and at the time you didn't notice it.

However, you had the services you were invoiced to receive. Therefore you need to pay what was on the invoice. As it stands, at this time you haven't.

You could ignore the letter of course. But I'm sure they'll ask again. You could continue to ignore them, at which point they could start legal proceedings to recover the money. Whether they would or not over £88 is anyone's guess.

If your financial position has changed and you can't at the moment afford the £88 you could contact them, be upfront, and ask for a payment plan at an amount you can afford. That wouldn't be an unreasonable request from you with it being their error.

It was an error on their part, and I wasn't sure if after a certain amount of time they shouldn't expect us to pay due to the reasons given.

    Yes, that'll be six years.

  • I am grateful for the replies and now understand the situation better. We will pay the amount outstanding as soon and we can and of course we know that it's the right thing to do. I posted for advice without really being able to see it from all angles, I now can.

Thanks again to all those who have taken the time to reply with info/advice.

why do I get the impression that this can be roughly translated as they can go and take a running jump for it ????

From your comments it appears you've read it in a way that it wasn't written. My post was truthful and sincere, as were my thanks to those who took the time to reply. I see nothing in what I've written that suggests what you have taken from it.

The full amount has been paid today.

    Then I apologise.

Obviously a case of dealing with my mum too many times who dismisses those she disagrees with a 'well I'm wrong then aren't I' comment.
  • I just find it peculiar someone who can afford an overseas holiday saying they can't pay a bill of £88 - is it just me??

I find it peculiar that someone can make and assumption as to how much money someone else has, and if they should be able to afford to pay £88 based on the fact that they can book an overseas holiday.

In fact... Where does it say it was an overseas holiday?
    Another assumption?

People shouldn't be categorised based on how much money you might think they have.

To be fair, it's not an unreasonable assumption, given that you posted on the Overseas Holidays board
(there is a UK Holidays board that you presumably would have posted on had it been a UK holiday ;))
