vauxhall Corsa
I have been told by vauxhall garage that there is a hole in the engine and will cost £3000.
Local garage will do the job for £950, will put a second hand engine with 28000 milage on it. 6 months guarantee.
Car is 4 yrs old.
I am not sure what to do.
Is it worth going for second hand engine?

£950 is bloody steep for a second hand engine. The trouble with a second hand engine is that you can't prove the mileage and at 28000 miles, its perfectly possible to have had enough lack of servicing to be a problem.
Look at reconditioned.
I just paid £963 for a fully rebuilt reconditioned engine including fitting+VAT for my car with a 12 month, 12000 mile guarantee. I expect it to do 100000 miles because basically, it's a new engine.
Have a look around Autotrader for engine reconditioners. Avoid the one near Heathrow though.0
