Entitlement? To company car

New boss wants us to provide our own cars for business use (typically we drive in excess of 30K miles a year each for the business) when we've always had company car or cash allowance. We would get the usual 45p/mile for first 10K miles, etc but nothing else. I was under the impression that HMRC rates were for cost of running vehicle only, not for cost of buying vehicle to service the business. Contract also states company car to be provided. Who's right?

Both of you are wrong. HMRC allowances are the "offset" against providing your own vehicle for business purposes. That represents more than running costs and includes an amount for depreciation.


If your contract states you have an absolute right to a company car - you do. For as long as you have a job. or until they change the contract - which they can do with ease.
