Buying a Car - Reverting back to original plate from Private plate

Hi

I'm Tommo and have just joined the forum tonight as I need advice before i collect my new (06 Reg) Vauhall Vectra SRi

I bought the car last weekend - looks in really good condition for the age

My only problem is it has a private plate on it - the dealer said he would get the plate reverted back to its 06 Plate then put it through an MOT before i drive it off - I was/am happy to wait

I rang him today for an update - he said that i can drive the car off the forecourt tomorrow with the private plate and would have to chase the original plate myself. My only issue is, once i drive it off the forecourt wont i be liable for the cost of the number plate and what about the MOT

Advice is greatly appreciated

Regards

Tommo

Problem is it takes a couple of weeks to change the plate back.

If you take it as it is and decide to leave the plates then there can be no cost to you.

You might even be able to make a few quid by selling the plates.

Not sure if you can revert back to the original plate unless its for sale. If the current number is sold you will get an appropriate age related plate. The registration on the mot is changed as part of the transfer.
Check the value of the private plate. If you can find a buyer the transfer is easy.
Ask for a discount from the dealer to cover the cost of the new registration.
  • Take the car with the plate, wait 3 months and if then dealer hasn't sorted it, sell it on ebay for £200 plus the transfer fee. DVLA will give you either the original plate or if that is not available another age related plate.

In 99% of cases you get the original plate back.
