The door frames are not standard size so they would have to re size the doors, although one of the joiners wants to make a bespoke door for one of the frames. We selected the Worcester door that Howdens do for the interior doors with one them to be glazed.
We have had two quotes so far:
First Quote
Cost for internal doors £1497.96
Cost for glazed back door £384.99
Cost for ironmongery for internal doors £60.00
Cost for back door ironmongery £56.00
Cost for handles £180.00
Cost for lipping doors with oak Inc labour £210.00
Cost for labour £600.00
Total £2988.95
The handles that are quoted are the Chrissi satin nickel
For this he will hang one new Richmond M&T glazed back door, fit one weather bar and fit all new ironmongery, cut down to the correct size 4 Worcester doors and re lip with oak and hang 4 Worcester doors and fit all new ironmongery.
Second Quote
To supply three Worcester oak doors £1350.00
One bespoke Worcester oak door £850.00
Fitting all Worcester doors with ironmongery £385.00
To supply and fit Richmond glazed door and locks, etc. £668.00
Painting the doors with sadolin 4 coats in gloss (I don't recall discussing this bit at all!) £420.00
Total £3673.00
These quotes have blown us away - they are about £1,000-£1,500 more than expected! The doors do need replacing as they all have cracked glazing, and most of the woodwork is damaged.
We are in the South East which I know makes a difference.

Best way to save money will be to have pine doors. If you are painting them in gloss. What is the point in having Oak? Pine doors will be £50 each and save a very large chunk on the materials cost.
You can also source your own handles. But don't buy too cheap. I would spend the money on a quality handle rather than an oak door. If it is painted properly it will look great.
In terms of labour. I'm in Surrey. We recently had a load of carpentry done including doors. All ironmongery changed and some of the doors shaved down as they didn't fit correctly. His day rate worked out at about £200-£250 a day and he could do about 4 doors a day.
If I were you. I would go for pine doors as they are to be painted. Pay a decent price for decent handles. Buy expensive hinges. I would get the carpenter to hang the doors. I would then get a decorator to paint them. Or do it yourself. Why would you want to pay a carpenter to do painting? At least that is how I see it.
I would also say get a third quote. And ask the first 2 for a price difference if just pine doors.0 -

Well ,Firstly I think both the quotes are way ,way, way too expensive for supplying the doors. The Worcester "Oak" glazed doors cost £156-00 incl vat each so 5 would be £780-00 inc vat . The Worcester "Oak" solid doors are around £144-00 icl vat each so for 5 doors the cost to them would be £720-00 incl vat.. I'm all for making a bit of profit on materials but that really is taking the biscuit.
Not sure if your aware but those doors are not solid Oak, they are Oak vaneered so the inner core may be anything from chipboard to pine and then over vaneered with an oak vaneer. This makes them stable but they are a cheap, mass produced door. I would also mention that its common to "re size" , "shoot in" or plane a door to shape/size but with these doors there is a maximum amount you can trip off the sides/top and bottom so make sure they don't trim too much or they will fall apart and your warranty will be void. If my memory serves me you should only trim 10mm off the bottom and around 5mm off each side..
The first quote labour wise it would be 1-1.5 days work to fit the internal doors and 1 day to fit the external door. In the South East you should be able to get a decent carpenter to work for between £150-£200 per day.
Re the 2nd quote the Richmond door would cost him roughly £200 inc vat so allowing for £185 for fitting,BS3621 5 lever sash lock, chubb security bolts , a decent pair of handles, letter plate etc the total would be roughly £500-00 inc vat if they were registered for vat it would be a bit higher but your quotes don't seem to mention vat so I'm guessing they are not registered. So he has whack on a fair bit of profit imo.Supplying 3 Worcester doors for £1,350-00 is a rip off plain and simple......
Making a single bespoke door is an expensive process, you bring the cost per item down when making volume..0 -
Thanks for the replies, we know they are oak veneer, fine with that. The interior doors we are not painting (sorry no pine thanks) so we were expecting the doors to be more pricey but not by this much.
I do not think we need a bespoke door really. Only one of the traders has suggested it.
Do you think it is just an awkward job and the traders don't want to do it and are overpricing? Should we keep getting more quotes? Try and buy the doors ourselves and then get requoted?0 -

Without looking at the job its difficult to say but given the fact that you can only trim those doors you chose by a small amount I don't see it as being and awkward job.
You could try and source the doors yourselves and get some quotes for labour only but failing that I would try and get more quotes to supply and fit.
The handles "Chrissi" will be very poor quality, you don't get good quality Ironmongery from Howdens,B&Q, Wickes etc. They will be no better than those on the link below and they are only £7.95+vat but come with a 10r guarantee. Your 1st quote says they will supply 5 pairs for £180-00 way over the top..

Thank you so much for your replies. The problem is I think the doors will need more than 10mm cutting back. At these prices it would be cheaper to order a custom solid oak door! (Not a bespoke one).
Re the handles, yes we noticed they were way expensive as well. I am surprised people would pay this much!0 -
I had 11 internal doors installed late last year.

Doors did come unfinished , so yes I had four coats of Sadlin
I got a very good deal on the doors. Installation /furniture etc alone came to about a £100 a door.0 -

Re the handles, yes we noticed they were way expensive as well. I am surprised people would pay this much!I have had clients who have specified designer handles costsing £150 per pair and they look very similar to some similar off the peg handles costing £50-00 per pair.. Having money doesn't necessarily mean you have any common sense or know the value of money imo.
Generally speaking a "custom " made door is the same as a "bespoke" made door..:)0 -
From Wallbash link, its a similar door with the same construction as the Howdens Worcester door and aorung the price you would be looking to pay, around £125-00 +vat. Looking at the spec it states the maximum you can take off each side and the top is 6mm, take any more off and you will be through to the chipboard core.
