Broadband Speed changes

My area is quite a long way from the exchange so Internet speeds tend to slowish but manageable. However, after a few months the line gradually becomes slower until it becomes far more inconvenient.
For example, 15 mins ago it was only 1mb/s via three different means of measuring it. To regain speed I have reset my router by holding down the reset. I'm now getting 2.7 mb/s which is near to the maximum theoretical speed possible based on the distance.
This method has been suggested by various providers over the years, and seems to work. However, is it standard for speeds to deteriorate in this way?

Would that tell me anything about a gradual deterioration over the period of a month or so, or merely the state of the connection at the time of test?0

It gives you a troubleshooting guide so you can at least try to isolate any problems and where they may be located.
Checking your stats and recording them over a period of time (such as SNR Margin, error stats etc.) might give some clues as to whether any slowdown is due to line problems, ISP problems, equipment problems in your house, etc.
Basically - we are randoms on the internet so we can only give advice and ideas; you're physically connected to your network so you need to do any checking.
