Is there anything I can do re: cake tin liners?

Hi all,

Mainly just a query really. I bought these this morning from dunelm mill. http://www.dunelm-mill.com/m/shop/tala-pack-of-50-cake-tin-liners-392749

Now in the description you will see it's got "made for 20cm cake tins". So I thought, great - will make my baking life easier. Got them home, opened them and took one out to put in my 20cm cake tin and lo and behold, it is way too small. When looking at it more closely, the diameter of the base is 17cm and the top is 20cm - a little bit like a big cupcake shape. But, as most people know, when making big cakes, the tins are generally the same diameter all the way up.

So, I have wasted £5.99 and am annoyed. Am I within my rights to return them even though I have opened them? I know it's not a lot of money but they are literally unusable.

The picture clearly shows they are "cupcake" shaped, so I wouldn't say they are unfit for purpose.
One important thing to remember is that when you get to the end of this sentence, you'll realise it's just my sig.

They arent cupcake shape, cake tin liners are all that shape.

If they say 20cm I would expect the base to be 20cm and be taking them back if they werent

Take them back and see what they say, what have you got to lose by asking?

Thanks all. Tried to update earlier but was out of signal. I phoned DM and they agreed that I can have a refund. I was only hesitant about it because I had opened them and tried one for size. I also had to get them to put me this pack away because they were the last ones and I felt awful because they took ages to find them for me!

Good result though. I also called tala customer service to let them know it might be worth updating the packaging (I know they don't have to do anything as I didn't buy directly from them but thought it was worth mentioning) and the lady said they had had a few complaints about the same thing. She also said she would call me back or email with an alternative and I haven't heard from her. I wasn't expecting anything from them as I say, but why say she'll call me back and then not bother!

So good result but I think when it says "for 8 inch cake tins", regardless of shape, they should fit 8 inch cake tins and these clearly didn't.

Poundland have the Jane Asher cake tin liners, loaf and round. Can't tell you the size of the round ones, as, currently lying on the bed with a cat curled up between my legs. Sorry.

I buy my cake tin liners from Lakeland, although only for loaf tins so I'm not sure if they do the shape you want.
  • Just press the paper to the edge of the tin and run your finger allong the grove to create a wider bass, I do this and use the same size liner for any size tin (within reason).
Alos, you can get them alot cheeper in other shops.
