Sale agreed outside ebay, what's the safest way to receive money?

I have and item for sale RRP around £250.

I was messaged by a buyer asking what price they could buy it now for and said that they could do cash upon pick up or other payment methods.

I've responded sending them the best price I'm willing to accept.

Providing this is agreed, I'm thinking of asking for payment via paypal but as a personal payment or gift as they call it. Therefore avoiding the paypal fees. If this goes ahead, is there any circumstances where they could claw the money back?

This item is legit but if we go outside ebay, there's no proof to back myself up.

You appear to be suggesting that eBay gives a seller some sort of protection- it doesn't.

As for a PayPal payment exactly the same rules apply whether on or off eBay, so for a collection item it is not suitable, even if it is gifted. If being collected then insist on cash. If it is being posted and buyer wants to retain some protection then take PayPal but make sure in follow the rules for seller protection. See the postage sticky thread.

    Thanks.

I'd rather not accept cash as I know someone who was given fake cash and it was too late by the time they had realised, although it did look very convincing.

Also, my brother who used to do take away deliveries on a part time basis whilst studying has been caught out several times with fake cash.

And from personal experience when accepting cash upon pick up it's always been a nightmare waiting around and some don't even bother show up.

So I rather accept payment electronically first.

    Why is this?

I thought gifted you don't pay fees so keep 100% of it?

It's nothing to do with fees and all to do with seller protection, you are aware of how seller protection works with PayPal aren't you?

It is generally thought that a gifted payment is completely safe, but there have been a few threads on the community boards now that make me express caution. It appears to be safe from an INR or SNAD claim, but not from a fraudulent use of card claim. So a gifted payment is safe for postage as you merely need proof of posting or invoke seller protection, but unsafe for collection items.

As for fake notes, surely it s easy enough to buy one of the pen markers ?

    Nope, honestly I'm not. :(

I actually have never thought of card fraud! Btw, what does SNAD stand for? (I guess INR is item not received). Seller comes from a different city (judging by their username anyway) so the price I quoted was inclusive of special delivery even though they have offered to pick up the item.

Yes, but there's always the "first time" that you're caught out. As I don't have one of them pens or lights, I'd rather not receive the cash.

SNAD = significantly not as described.

Do take a read of the sticky postage thread and whatever you do don't take PayPal on a collection only item.

Personally I'd spend a couple of pounds on a detector pen, but if you are really unhappy at that then you are just about stuck with hoping buyer will use a bank transfer. However, make sure you know how to stay safe with that, ie checking your own bank balance and ensuring payment was made by transfer and not paid in by any other means

Also, the reason a buyer might be happy to pay extra with PayPal but still save you the postage by collecting is that they know they can scam you.

One last thing, please don't sell anything else until you read up on PayPal protection. 99.9999% of PayPal transactions are absolutely fine and will never be a problem, however, if you don't know how to stay safe then you increase your chances of being scammed.

Again can I suggest a read of the sticky postage thread.

Id only ever take cash for face to face selling. Buy/borrow a pen if you are worried about cash being fake, or meet buyer at your bank and pay it in, they should spot fake cash, and you are in a public place with lots of cameras if it is fake.

what paypal seller protection there is, does not cover face to face transactions - sec 11.6 C
    https://www.paypal.com/gb/webapps/mpp/ua/useragreement-full#11

if you take paypal for face to face deal, you will have no "proof of delivery" to defend against a item not recived claim + the buyer will be able to claim for up to 180 days via paypal for INR or SNAD.

asking for a "gift" payment for goods is against paypals policy.
