Locator Tags - great for finding lost cats etc.

We lost our 13 1/2 year old cat for a good 6 hours one day before she toddled in as if nothing had happened. I decided to make sure it never happened again so I researched and bought this Loc8tor system. I've never actually seen these anywhere in a shop in Northern Ireland so maybe if anyone has you could let me know? Although pet shops do tend to be a lot more expensive than Amazon.

It comes with two tags and they're as light as a feather. We've put one on each of our moggies and since then we have been able to relax in a way we haven't been for years because each time a furbag disappears we get the handset out, switch it on and locate the miscreant. We've done it on multiple occasions now.

The link I've given is to the RNIB's storefront on Amazon because it's the cheapest and there's free UK delivery. Obviously these things have other uses, especially for the blind. For example you can attach one to a set of keys and use the tones to locate them. Which is why the RNIB are promoting them.

For cats they are better on females because the range is limited to 120 yards (they say). In fact I find that 40 yards is a more accurate distance. So if your cat is an un-neutered Tom he could possibly roam as much as over a mile in any evening and this wee system would be no good at all. Neutered females only wander up to around 50 yards from home so it usually finds them no trouble - even through walls or other houses, under cars, bushes etc.

There's also a tone on the token as well as a flashing light. The light is very useful at night for locating puddies who hide in long grass or in bushes.

Definitely the best product we've invested in this year.

So - you are irresponsible and selfish enough to let your cats wander unchecked potentially polluting neighbours properties not to mention the destruction of wildlife?

I hate to break it to you GlynnD but..........................the word on the street is that Cats will wander all over the show, in fact they can even cross roads and visit neighbouring houses. A shocker I know but its in their nature apparently :)

Thanks Rolo but even I (as daft as I am) recognise a come-on or wind up as obvious as that. lol. :D

Not a massive cat fan I'm afraid Glyn.

Wasn't it John Wayne who said in one of his movies when questioned on the ownership of a cat he replied "General Price doesn't belong to me, cats don't belong to anyone, he just rooms with me". Probably sums up cats nicely for me too.

Ask any person who has a cat and they'll tell you: cat's don't have owners, they have staff. :p

It's true. I can attest to that.

A cat will regard the place it sleeps and gets fed as home however. It's up to the slaves who pander to it to ensure it keeps returning there. They're not loyal though. Food is the driving force really but one of ours is 13 1/2 and been with us since she was 8 weeks old, so we must be doing something to please her. ;)

Not everyone is a massive cat fan in the same way not everyone is a massive dog fan but I'd stake my pension portfolio that you wouldn't get a gun and shoot one.

Oh Contraire... If I caught the little shyster who's crapping in my flower beds every other night I'd be very sorely tempted .....

I seem to remember this sentiment of yours goes back quite some time. You have my sympathies but I'm afraid I can't suggest any solution which you probably haven't already been offered.

Ohhhhhhhhh Indeed....... I don't mind cats per-se in the right environment...... What I hate is when you have a street or development of 50 or 60 houses and there's about 20 bl00dy cats running about the place fighting, sh1tt1ng & p1$$ing everywhere, sitting on your car, digging up your veg patch etc. etc. etc.. I think cats should be more regulated/licenced, like dogs are, just from the point of view of, in my view, there are too many of them. Too many are out freely roaming the place being a threat to small local wildlife, a health hazard (in the form of the Toxoplasma parasite in their feces) and a bl00dy nuisance at times......

I sympathise entirely. The memsahib said just last night she would like another cat, which would bring us up to three. I gave her an emphatic no and reminded her we have neighbours. We won't be getting a third cat until we have at least an acre of our own ground. Odds on there will be a clause in our deeds to that effect and I bet you that's the case round your way too but so many people ignore these clauses because it costs a lot of money to fight a case on them.

As for the law: I don't know that there can be any increased regulation on cats other than governing the number in any home, which would be a good idea. It would stop people like you being affected by stupid neighbours who don't look after their pets properly and let them roam wild. It would also put a stop to these misguided old ladies who keep up to 40 cats in a three bedroom Housing Executive house. Well intentioned but not good for the animals, the neighbours or even the women themselves. How anyone can live with the stench is beyond me.

I'd also make neutering mandatory unless a licence has been granted to breed. Which would only be given if the premises were suitable and had large grounds. That's my suggestion anyway.

We've gone as far as fitting these tracking devices to our two so we always know where they are and can bring them in quickly if they start fighting with other animals. It's as much as any responsible cat owner can do at the moment as far as I know.

See - not all cat owners are inconsiderate numpties. :p
