    I've been Money Tipped!
Otoh, some of those less likely to cause actual problems ( still smarting about that leaf curl) might be fun for a little guerrilla gardening in areas that might benefit in some localities.
  • That seems like an excellent idea! My own contribution: the runner beans I planted at the bottom of the sub-station wire fence all succumbed to the slugs, but next year I'll grow them on a bit before planting..

Lidl and co can be good but their stock is often NOT what is on the label; a nectarine that turned out to be a white fleshed peach?

Or the multiple varieties of apple that all turned out to be Bramley.

And too often they have been shorn at about 4ft so are impossible to grow into chosen forms.

If you have £3 you can afford to gamble and do not want to grow a cordon etc; go for it. You might get something worth having or not.

For a little over £1 each I can make my own trees of the varieties that I really want; upt to £2 if I insist on an expensive dwarf rooting stock. Take a year longer but worth the wait (currently weighed down by apples although some will not be in eating condition until spring)

You graft your own? Me too!

Asda have loads in at the moment.

However, having bought previously from Lidl and Gardening Express...I have since gone to a John Hancox at Scottish Fruit Trees. I bought 6 from him that were delivered and planted in February 2013 and have already got 7kg of fruit from them with three trees with large fruits still on them.

For me its a case of thinking that Im going to have these for many years to come, so they are an investment....and a tasty one too.

I saw those in Asda, in the foyer before you go into the store, they're about 5/6 foot tall and a fiver.

Going to a garden centre is not foolproof either, years ago I bought a Golden Delicious from local garden centre

It turned out not to be Golden Delicious, but it is a nice early eating apple, variety unknown
