Using ebay to get replacement kitchen units

Hi all,

I have posted previously with regards replacing kitchen units. People have suggested Wickes, B&Q, etc.

I'll explain where I am now at. I went for a curry with a few friends over two weeks ago and one of them suggested very cleverly getting the replacement kitchen units via ebay, hiring a van and storing the kitchen units in my garage. For info, I can get a new or almost new kitchen units locally for less than £300 all in and some are of very good quailty. I already have my plumber and a friend of his lined up to do the work for a fee, which is far less than I have been quoted elsewhere. So for approximately £1800, I will effectively be getting new or almost new kitchen units fitted so this is what I am going to do. I accept that I will have to be careful to ensure that the replacement units measurement are a near fit with my current units but as my fiend pointed out they are normally generic measurements and you can surround the kitchen units with tiles to hide any slight anamolies.

What do people think with regards the above ?

Thanks

  • I've done it as I mentioned in a separate post a few minutes ago, apart from the hiring a van part, as I already own an old VW T25. Bought units, appliance and worktops from someone that was extending and no longer needed them. One of my garages is full of kitchen units. Was a long day shifting them though!

As long as you are confident of the measurements and your ability to do the installation or get it done then no reason not to. I bought the whole thing to entirely replace what I have, rather than to match exisiting units.

If they include real wood, that probably won't much like living in an unheated garage in autumn and winter, the wood will go mouldy, absorb moisture and expand etc. so you will need to keep any proper wood indoors - composites should be OK in a garage (unit carcasses). I learned this the hard way when I discovered I could no longer open the oak doors of my second hand framed units...

Thanks for your response. I am in no rush and can wait until next Spring.

For info, I have received some ridiculous quotes. The worst one was from Kitchen restorations http://www.kitchenrestoration.co.uk/?gclid=CM7glPzzmsECFQLJtAodJw0AKw, who wanted to charge me the most yet weren't supplying hardly any new units. Don't use this company IMHO; just rip off merchants especially as they tried cold-selling me their products.

Anyway I will use ebay to get my units unless someone advises me otherwise.
