Please help - iMac has stopped receiving emails

Hello,
I seem to have a problem with my iMac and receiving emails.
I have my gmail account linked to it (and has been for a few years), so that when I click on the mail item in the toolbar, my emails come up. And when I get new emails, there is a red number that appears on the icon.
Today though, I am not receiving emails on my iMac. I don't understand why. If I go online and look at my gmail account, my new emails are there. If I go on my iPod, my new emails are automatically coming up, but when I click on the iMac icon, the only emails there are from yesterday or before that.
Does anyone know how I can fix this? I am not technically minded! I haven't ate red any settings or anything, so not sure why this is happening.

If you are using Apple Mail (?) as your desktop client, you should get an error message coming up if you click on 'Get Mail' and nothing is downloading.
Basics-can you send from that account using Apple Mail? Test by emailing yourself.
Possibly the password or server addresses have corrupted. No free lunch, and no free laptop
