It would be a shame to throw out our 3 year old Samsung LE46A557P2FXXU.
I have been looking on youtube for possible solution videos.
Overall the screen is very bright and but some areas are dark - for example colours that should be show purple or dark blue are dark and no its not the contols
Tonight I will open the back and look for anything obvious, but in lieu of that any suggestions please?

Don't look on youtube, look on the entire internet, for faults for your model of TV. If it's a common one, you might get lucky and you might get told how to fix it. Capacitors are often the culprit. look for them bulging, especially at the top, or even bursting, and for goo around them. If you're handy enough with a soldering iron and they're easy to access you could fix it. So you've got inconsistent brightness across the screen? on all inputs?0

we have ordered a new tv, but if I can fix this one we can use it in a different room rather than bin it. Im quite keen to try my hand as there is no pressure.
yes its all outputs.
did google, but not sure if there is a technical term for what Im experiencing."enough is a feast"...old Buddist proverb0 -
have a look here:-

sounds like it's a common problem, and needs various combinations of light tunnel, colour wheel and DMD board to attempt a fix...gonna be costly..........Gettin' There, Wherever There is......
I have a dodgy "i" key, so ignore spelling errors due to "i" issues, ...I blame Apple

Sounds more like a backlight problem to me. Nothing to do with light tunnels - different type of set, but nice of you - GunJack to try and help!0
